Thanks guys for the suggestions. Very much appreciated. It's not that I don't like the idea of Unity, just for me personally it feels a bit clunky. I don't intend bringing up this endless debate or to start a flame war! Gnome 3 vs Unity isn't a question of defaults - they're two different shells for the same DE.
