yes, there is some code that was introduced into the forthcoming 3.1<br>
release that adds support for the various notification mechanisms: Growl<br>
(MacOS) and Libnotify (Linux) and whatever the windows equivalent is.<br>

However, a recent comment on bugzilla indicates that it might have been<br>
pulled due to a blocking bug for the time being:<br>

There is however a Thunderbird extension that adds the Indicator Applet<br>
