just check your grub config to make sure it is pointing to your kernel
image with
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
You are looking for an entry with a line like
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27-12-generic root=UUID=##################### ro\
quiet splash
If there is an entry with something like that all should be fine to reboot.

ah yes there is one
so I shall reboot and now try to sort out my graphics driver stoopid thing
now I remember why I tried to fiddle with the kernels... cos the graphics driver won't install properly because of them. Exactly the same error message as the kernel error is returned when I try to install them.
