I don't think I have ever seen the machine reboot by itself when X
fails to start. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or F2 if that doesn't work) when the blue screen is showing, and you
should be greeted with a text login prompt.<br>

PS. Someone once told me that you don't get the grub menu if it is not a
dual-boot. How do you get to the recovery mode in this case?<br></div></div>
