I spoke to Till (Ubuntu's printing stack expert and all round Linux
printing guru) off list and he as replied to Barry directly.

In the interests of sharing the knowledge this is what he had to say:




Hi,

this is something which often happens. You have a printer which is newer
than the Ubuntu version which you are using.

HP is releasing new versions of HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) more
or less every two months (on http://hplipopensource.com/) and we are
putting the newest version before Feature Freeze into each release of
Ubuntu.

On http://hplipopensource.com/ you can look up whether your printer is
supported by the most current HPLIP version. Independent of this, HP's
printers (or their communications protocols) do not change much between
generations, so often the driver for an older model works.

Which printer model did you select to make your printer work?

Do not report a bug on CUPS. CUPS is not supposed to deliver drivers for
new printers.
