Needed to try a few times, remove/reinsert, came good, tested on 
various, including Skype, good audio so transition from 12.04 to 16.04 
now completed.
The Trond USB audio device is reliable, does not fail in a few hours as 
some do, if computer 3.5mm jack has become intermittant, the Trond USB 
audio device is a good repair option. Michael.D
