There's a tool in Ubuntu to remove NT passwords:

Or you could use a specialist CD:

For such an old PC (>10y old), any modern Linux distro will really
struggle. About the only *buntu with even a chance is LXLE:
http://lxle.net/
Go with the 12.04 version.
But it would be better suited to Puppy Linux or DamnSmallLinux.
