[ubuntu-uk] Home folder keeps disappearing

If you are logged in I don't see how it can have disappeared yet leave
you logged in with anything like a working system.  What happens if in
a terminal you run
ls ~
Also, when you cannot log in what happens if you log in as a different
user and run
sudo ls /home
