I had a *lot* of Compiz/Unity crashes on 12.10, so I've been running
the 13.04 alpha and then beta version for a month or so and it seems
to be significantly more stable.

FWIW, I found that to use `unity --replace` I had to switch to a
virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F1 thru' F6) and log in and run it from
there.

In a terminal, I found that just using

compiz &

... worked better. Unity is a Compiz plugin, so whichever caused the
crash, restarting Compiz also restarts Unity.
