[ubuntu-uk] VLC crashing and won't exit.

I use VLC regularly and have noticed it hasn't been behaving itself this
week. It's a 12.04 install and has been working fine for months.

Loading a whole directory in random play works for 1 or 2 files then at
the end of a file it will just stop. Skipping tracks or pushing stop
does nothing. Quitting closes the window but as you can see in the
screenshot the icon stays in the top bar. Loading VLC again adds another
process and another icon to the bar. The menu on each icon works but
requesting quit does nothing.

As you can see from the second attached file system monitor is unusable,
it simply greys out for 30 seconds, releases for about 5 and then greys
out again. Look at the insane memory usage of the top VLC entry. What's
going on here?
