If you will be your own admin, and if you have not yet played with
unity, then you might easily at first feel in alien territory even
though the default stuff will probably go seamlessly.

I found my own habits and expectations faded only quite slowly, which
caused irritation and frustration at first, even though I was sold on
the unity principle, and I also knew novice friends who liked it.

The 12.04 beta1 (DVD) is available for download now and although at
this stage a beta1 (install) is attracting large numbers of updates,
as might be expected, the live dvd works ok here, and would give you
opportunity for some advanced experience.

Even if you later consider a Gnome3 direction - also maybe a bit alien
- a useful wayside rest stop could be an additional install of an
Lubuntu or Xubuntu session from the software centre
xubuntu desktop
This would give the option of logging into a non unity session with a
nicely retro feel environment.
