I did as you suggested, everything was up to date, 0 packages installed, 
etc.

I rebooted, but I still have the same problem.

It appears to be something wrong with python, and after searching 
online, lots of other users have had similar problems with python, 
running various programs that depend on it.

But so far no obvious solution.
