The Classic interface in 11.04 uses GNOME 2.x, because 11.04 ships
with GNOME 2.x not GNOME 3.x.

No.

Ubuntu 11.10 will ship with GNOME 3.x and Unity 3D as the default
desktop with Unity 2D as the alternative option, not Classic.
