If you have an NTE5 socket (i.e. one that looks like it comes in two 
bits - see this for reference: 
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/tools/bt-master-socket.html) then try 
unscrewing the front of the socket, you should find another socket 
behind it.

Plug your router in to this second socket and see if it makes any 
difference.

If you can borrow a router then maybe that might be a good way of 
checking your connection too.
