FWIW, when I left Windows for linux based systems, I found that re
installing the whole thing was much easier than I had expected, and
when the time came, when my ambitions exceeded my experience (easily
done for me) and things screwed up, I regularly then just re
installed. It had not been a problem in Windows because the entry of
the password did not have the same significance as it has in GNU/Linux
based stuff.
I do not think I saw a mention of Live sessions in your posts. I would
certainly consider using live sessions - live CD, USB etc, to explore
the initial offerings. For example onieric alpha 2, in live USB, runs
the graphics well in a machine I have which was completely pants in
11.04 for that particular machine.
