That is a very interesting idea.  I need a serial or usb port to talk
to the weather station (a LaCrosse WS2300).  The WRTSL54GS has a usb
port, but there don't seem to be many of them about.

The standard routers do have an onboard serial port I think, but one
has to hack the hardware to make it accessible.
