Im assuming the delay was due to some lead in silence on the track? A normal
CD player wont have the functionality to be able to cue up the track just
before the sound. You need a DJ cd player like a pioneer CDJ-800 to do
things like that. However on the software side I havent tried mixxx but I
would say any "DJ" application would do it, examples I can think of are
Ableton, Traktor, (not linux apps those though), or any other linux based DJ
apps which allow you to cue up a track. However heres another angle you
might want to try:

1. Install Audacity in Ubuntu.
2. Play your sound effects into audacity and record them
3. Edit them and chop off the lead in silence of the effects.
4. Save them out as audio or digital files (depends on your CD player, will
it play mp3?)
5. Burn the tracks onto a CD

When you play them on a regular CD player, they should fire off almost
instantly.
