Since posting, I tried OpenShot and it seems to be a good GUI with good
rendering.  I may be using that in future to make the edit (from
captures under Kino) followed by burning under DeVeDe.  The latter has a
facility to input vob files so it doesn't have to render, and OpenShot
can make a vob ....  It is worth tweaking DeVeDe for best results.  The
fast renders are only OK, the slower ones are noticeably better.  

My general comment is probably that apps that can make a fair video clip
for You-Tube are not up to making DVD's.

I failed to get the tovid scripts to work properly - but I have to admit
to lack of patience in setting up.  DeVeDe was really easy!
