My initial thoughts are:

1) You have a proxy set up for firefox and/or for the whole ubuntu system

Check System > Preferences > Network Proxy - it should be set to "Direct
connection to the Internet" Settings

2) Incorrect network / gateway settings (less likely)

Check System > Preferences > Network Connections - select your wired
connection and select Edit.  Check the tab IPv4
