I've been running a home built low-power server for nearly 2 years now.

Based on this Mobo: http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=11212
which I've downclocked to 1Ghz.

I've installed it a fairly cheap mini-itx case (I think it cost £14 -
new - on eBay)

It runs Linux (currently Ubuntu Server 8.10)

It also runs:

my business phone system (Asterisk)
Samba for our family shared network
Acts as a local development server with LAMP (For Joomla! Wordpress et
al) SVN Code repository
It also ran Java/Tomcat and Alfresco and a Calendar Server for a time.

It runs headless.

I wrote about it in a series of blog posts when I was intending to stick
Untangle on it too - but in the end I never bothered with UT although
that's a great product IMHO.

You can read about it here if you like (from the bottom-up):

Any of the VIA or Atom based devices would be fine for more than most
people's requirements.

There are new Atoms about to appear based on smaller die (35nm) and a
new chipset on the Mobo which is less power hungry than the original
Intel 845 which they supplied.

Hope this helps.
