Thanks for replying.  I tried the Karmic Live CD and found that the 
microphone works with it!  So it must be a configuration issue and not 
a hardware issue.

The chip is a Realtek ALC833, for which the the driver is HDA-Intel.

I have full listing from alsa-info.sh for both the live CD and my 
installed system, plus a diff between them, but I don't know enough 
about this stuff to know where to begin to find a significant difference.
