Another one I like to show new users is to install the window selector 
panel applet (as opposed to the window list) which shows apps open in 
all workspaces.

I usually install parcellite too, so they don't ring me about copy and 
paste not working after they close the app they copied from. 
Unfortunately the maintainer of parcellite is stepping down, and glipper 
(the GNU alternative) is somewhat unstable, often crashing on login.
