We do this to manage some of our customers' servers. We also use 
private/public key pairs, and configure ssh so so no logins are allowed 
with passwords.

Also, I concur with an earlier post and recommend installing denyhosts.

sudo apt-get install denyhosts

Very useful against bruteforce attacks.
