What about this? Would it work?
      * Right click on the network manager icon before any connection is
        attempted,
      * Select Edit Connections
      * Select Wireless
      * Click Add
      * Manually configure your connection:
              * SSID
              * IPv4 Settings set to manual with fixed IP
              * Security settings as per the router's defaults
      * Save it
      * Connect
      * Configure the router
      * Once configured, go back to connection settings and delete the
        manually configured connection
      * Re-connect the normal way

And in theory, no reboot required!

I know it works with a wired connection but I've never actually tried
with a wireless one as I haven't configured a router from scratch in a
long time. If you do that regularly, I'd be quite interested in knowing
whether this works.
