I did this recently for an East Midlands train, and also replaced it 
with a new ticket. I chanced writing to EMT for a refund (including all 
parts of the ticket), and got all of the money back --- they didn't even 
charge an admin fee. Might be an idea for you to try that. I did ask for 
the refund before the dates on the ticket though, so there was no chance 
that I could have used it.

Worth a shot if you get no takers.
