[ubuntu-uk] Upgrading Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 server to latest version? And when has an Ubuntu server "crashed"?

Many thanks for the very useful replies regarding upgrading the server.
With regards to the "crash", I've just had a chance to get into the server room and investigate. When I turned on the monitor, it just displayed a "No Signal Input" message, though the green light was on on the box itself. Hence, I had no choice but to turn the box off an on.
I'll investigate further tomorrow (when I'm officially on duty!).
Bye,
Alex

Hello, Steve and Alex.
I agree with Steve that you would be better to use LTS versions on a
server. I'm still running 6.06 LTS on some of our servers, but I will
upgrade these to 8.04 LTS before 10.04 LTS. We mainly run 8.04 LTS.
Re: Your 'crashes' - Your server may be ping'able in single-user, when
the web server and SSH daemons are not running. Have you checked the
uptime and tried running "last reboot"?
If your server reboots itself, because of a power failure or some other
problem, it may end up in single-user mode if filesystem corruption has
occurred that requires manual intervention to fix. In this state, the
server may be ping'able, but the web server and SSH daemons won't be
running.
Bye,
Tony.
