[ubuntu-uk] Scambled screen & Beginning Ubuntu

Can only say +1 to the live cd. It's invaluable for me at the moment  
till I can fix my windows pc.

Unfortunately I don't think I can help, although there is something in  
that book about scrambled screens. Try looking in the index for it.
