The other thing to try to help speed things up is to disable DRI in
your xorg.conf file.  I have an X31 too and find scrolling in Jaunty
unbearably slow for terminals and firefox.  I disabled DRI as
a work around for a mesa bug affecting mythtv and it helps the scroll
problem too.

To disables DRI, edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.  In the "Device"
section, add the following line:
Option "DRI" "off"

Then reboot or restart X.
