DONE IT!!!

ftr, I had to select Serial Port in the Add new printer bit, then choose
my own ppd file. The one that works is the 810 installed by the package
you pointed me to - being the wrong one for the printer, some things
take a while to process :p but that's fine :)

Thanks Tony, it would appear that it ends up taking me to roughly the
same place anyway so I'll just ignore Canon. What's annoying is that
from looking at their website, this appears to be a popular printer (or
was), yet, as a large corporation, they manage to drive people away from
linux. Grr.

And if it means anything, the location for the printer is
serial:/dev/ttyS0?baud=115200 . I can't do anything else extra special
with it, but it all works fine now.
