Hi Greg,

It sounds like the hardware in this laptop is not supported by Ubuntu 
8.04, it may well have a newer unsupported chipset.  Could you try 
downloading Ubuntu 9.04 and giving that a try?

Otherwise you may find that the latest point release which is 8.04.3 
which includes updated packages and I'd have thought updated modules to 
support newer hardware.
