I think I've been there! It's probably why one of the scruffy bits of paper
that live under my keyboard has this scribbled on it:
sudo apt-get install gdm ubuntu-desktop
because next time you reboot you only get a console to log in to to
isue this command.
But I still have Evolution, so it must have been the consequence of
doing something else.
