I had to do that for another problem - my icons were missing, and if I
added them manually the disappeared on restart. Not only did I cure that
problem, but this one as well. The culprit? Don't know why I wasted list
time - it was of course that stupid Ubuntu Firefox Modifications add-on.
I had it disabled in previous versions, but disabling it now seems to
have cured both the problems.

Thanks for all the advice - in my Windows days safe mode is the first
thing I'd try. This Linux lark is making me soft. :)
