Sure thing Paul.

Probably the easiest way is to use VirtualBox, as described here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox/FirstVM is a quick guide
to how to get started. At the step "Attaching a CDROM Image", you can
use a physical CD in your host machine's drive if you don't have the
required ISO image.

Ask if you get stuck.

When you've got your VM installed and booted, you can mess around with
it as much as you like. The Snapshot feature is especially good for
this - before you do something that might break your VM, pause it and
take a snapshot. If it all goes horribly wrong, go back to the
snapshot.
