It depends on your graphics card drivers,
if you have an nvidia chipset make sure to boot up with the monitor
connected to the machine you can run nvidia-settings (system ->
administration -> nvidia x server settings) to setup a 'second screen',
either a copy of your current desktop, an extension of it, or a
completely separate one. it should show up on your tv and you can play
video from there. I'm not sure about non nvidia chipsets though.
