To follow on from Matthew's points, Rob:
Setting up LDAP to use as a replacement for /etc/passwd was recently
covered in Linux Format. Look at issues 104 (setting up LDAP and
adding users) and 105 (using LDAP for login authentication and
mounting /home/<user> via NFS).
