Distributed VCS is definitely the future, but don't cripple yourself by
only following one. Git is essential if you intend to work on the
kernel or in Ruby on Rails, whilst knowing Bazaar [1] is also
essential if you are going to be working on Ubuntu or with Launchpad.
Mecurial [2] also has it's place, and Subversion [3] will not be
disappearing any time soon.

Obviously I'm biased towards Bazaar, but I have used and continue to
use the others where appropriate.

The trick is to be familiar with, and practice, version control
(distributed or otherwise) in general. That will serve you far better
than tying yourself to any single tool.
