It's fine, I've got a few hours to kill over the next few days anyway!

Spot on, it's a database engine much like MySQL etc. From the output
of the netstat command it doesn't appear to be running, so we may be
able to remove it.

I've noticed that I mistyped a command in my last email and the final
command should have been

sudo aptitude upgrade

can you re-run this command and see if that works?

if it doesn't, type the following:

sudo aptitude remove postgresql-8.1

and if it says that anything other than postgresql needs to be
removed, paste the message into a reply to this one, otherwise, let it
remove the software and try the upgrade again.

Kind regards,

Matt
