So I take it this means that schools will be able to choose Open Source 
alternatives such as OpenOffice.org, Firefox and maybe also Linux of 
some description.  Will they be able to install the software themselves 
or will they have to go through these Open Source suppliers?]

Also, this might be a stupid question, but does this mean that there 
will be more educational software written specifically for the National 
Curriculum which will be released under an Open Source licence?  (such 
as GPL etc).
