I've been meaning to investigate this for a while. This appears to be a
known issue regarding upgrades from Hardy Alpha/Beta. It does not affect
Gutsy->Hardy upgrades nor Hardy Final fresh installs. For example, I get
this problem on my laptop which was Hardy Alpha->Hardy but not on my
desktop which was Gutsy->Hardy.
This thread:

...suggests that the solution is:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo X -configure
sudo mv <location given for your new xorg> /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Haven't tried it yet, but will when I get home to my laptop. Would
appreciate it if you could let me know if this fixes it!
