What card have you got on the Ubuntu box?

It isn't a Realtek RTL8111/8168B Gigabit ethernet adaptor is it?

I have one of these in two of my PCs and I found that I was getting
regular dropouts on the network until I manually downloaded the Realtek
Linux driver and compiled it (it's released under the GPL). I think it
was down to the driver included with Ubuntu detecting the card
incorrectly (I think there was some very slight difference in the cards
which caused problems).

I posted something on my blog (well, I say blog, I haven't updated it in
in a couple of months!). You can find it here anyway:
http://communitylinux.blogspot.com/

The link to the Realtek site works but I think it's a slightly newer
driver (8.006.00 rather than 8.005.00 which I used) but it certainly
fixed the problem on Ubuntu 7.10. Can't say I've noticed any issues on
Ubuntu 8.04 as such.

Might be worth trying if you do have one of these Realtek network
adaptors on your motherboard anyway. I'd also second trying a crossover
cable between the two machines and setting them both to have static IP
addresses.

Good luck.

Rob
