Ah, cheers Tony. I was indeed missing the semi-colon. Years of ingrained
Windows behaviour blinded me to the instructions.
Thanks to Alan too for introducing me to the locale command, I am indeed
using LANG=en_GB.UTF-8. And I can now get ê ě. Marvellous stuff. A four
year itch thoroughly scratched.
