I don't know how experienced you are, but I would say that it is safe.
Last time I installed e17 it was from CVS, and it all went into /opt
so did not mess up anything installed with the system.
If you really want to have a play with e17, and you don't mind rolling
your sleeves up and getting stuck in, then go for it. Have a look
around and try and find a recent build script. It should automate the
whole process. The biggest problem I always had was making sure all
the prerequisites were installed.
Don't expect too much help from the e17 guys as they clearly state
that e17 is still in development. There are plenty of people on the
Ubuntu forums that have done this, and you may even find somebody who
maintains a set of debs in case you do not want to mess with sources.
