Well, so far found the Open Home Automation Project, but doesn't seem to
have been updated since July last year.

Plenty of "freeware" too, but not on sites that I recognise.  And of course
the proprietory stuff too.

There's an outfit that have done some work in the Apple arena and ported to
windows, but only have a partial port to Linux.

And lastly, Phil, found some nice libraries for USB etc but nothing that
indicates RS-485 protocols, but going cross-eyed now, so will have to hit
the coffee instead.

I once herd someone claim that whatever you want to do, there is
probably going to be a Perl library already to do it.

Therefore have a look on CPAN.
