Can you get root access from the console? If so, we should be able to help.

Ie. pull up a terminal and type:

sudo echo Yes I cam get root access

If that works, you should be able to do:

sudo passwd otherusername

...and change the other user's password.

Also, now would be a good time to check whether your backups are 
readable. There's no need to restore from them yet, but it would be 
useful to know just how cautious we need to be in helping you further.
