I hit the problem recently while upgrading my Dad's computer, which
hadn't had a single upgrade since Christmas. The machine runs Xubuntu
and it happened when moving from 7.10 to 8.04.
As far as I could see the locales tool mentioned in the bug report was
hanging because a sub-process (or something it was waiting on anyway)
was being killed because it was running out of memory. I didn't get
chance to add anything to the bug report because I ran out of time
(only a short visit to the parents) and it seems pretty comprehensive
as it is.
Problems happen occasionally with any OS, but the frustrating thing
here is the complete lack of feedback to the user - no error messages,
no way of knowing anything has even gone wrong and no way of knowing
what to do (you don't know at what point the installation of new
packages fails, so no way of knowing what a reboot will do).
Anyway, thanks to it being free software we can at least eventually
find out what is going wrong and know that it will be fixed.
