The alternative would be to try the Iceweasel packages from Debian.
Iceweasel is Debian's build of Firefox 2, they name change is partly so they
can continue to patch and support it beyond the lifetime of the official
Mozilla builds.
Debian packages should work on Ubuntu, but I've not tried it.
