Take a look at art.gnome.org again for desktop backgrounds. Of course,
there are thousands of desktop backgrounds available all over the
Internet, so all you need to do is search Google for something you think
that looks cool.

As for desktop gadgets, there are a few different gadget 'platforms'
available, none of which I have any experience of. You might like to try
gdesklets [1], superkaramba [2] or screenlets [3].
