Did you install it through apt? (sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-new)
Also, why run it form the commandline? Just go to
System>Prefs>AAppearence then the visual effects tab and select normal
or extra.
If you do: sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager, you'll
get a "custom" option too
