I used the gspca driver, downloaded and compiled it by hand (as I've 
always had to do with this cam). Seemed to work perfectly after that.
For info lsusb give me:
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:08d9 Logitech, Inc.
and under lsmod:
videodev               29312  1 gspca
v4l2_common            18432  1 videodev
v4l1_compat            15364  1 videodev

so I'd assume that gspca has been written to work with v4l1, as you 
where alluding to the problem originating from there?
