I don't know the answer to your query, but it might help if you
provided some more info for people who don't know the spec. of the
Inspiron 6400.

What video card does the machine have, and what video driver are you
using in Ubuntu? If you don't know what card the machine has, you
should be able to find out using the Hardware Information application
in Ubuntu - choose the System menu, Preferences sub-menu, then
'Hardware Information'. Scroll down the list on the left and it should
include an entry for your video hardware. Exact model numbers help.
